Two-Day Tour to Ancient Ur and the Marshes seeing the great Ziggurat of the Moon God, and exploring the marshes of southern Iraq
Day 1: Ancient Ur
From Baghdad, we travel to Nasiriyah province to marvel at the well-preserved Ziggurat of Ur, a pyramid-like stepped temple tower dating back to 2100 BC, during the time when this ancient city served as the capital of the Neo-Sumerian Kingdom.
Explore the Great Pit of Ur, the royal tombs cemetery, including that of Queen Puabi, where golden jewelry was found. Discovered by Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1920s.
See Dub-La-Mah temple which served as the entrance to the passage that leads to the ziggurat.
A special access to the house of the biblical prophet Abraham.
Then to the Chibayish Marshes, home to a community living in reed houses, embracing a way of life dating back to the ancient Sumerians.
After we rest in a reed house, a delightful dinner of masgouf fish awaits us and a glass of tea comes afterward.
Enjoying our time conversing with the local marsh dwellers, the Marsh Arabs.
Overnight in the marshes.
Day 2: Chibayish Marshes
In the morning, we have a local breakfast of Gaimer (a thick buffalo milk cream), and date syrup, served with fresh, clay-oven baked bread.
Head deep into the Chibayish Marshes on an exhilarating boat tour through the waterways, witnessing towering reeds, swimming water buffaloes, and various migratory bird species.
Visit a tribal reed guesthouse, a larger reed structure where local tribesmen gather.
See Martyr Monument in the marshes.
Back to Baghdad.
